Migrating from UA to GA4
Why should I migrate from universal analytics to GA4?
Migrating from Universal Analytics (UA) to GA4 can provide your business with more comprehensive and accurate insights into your website performance. GA4 provides insights on user engagement, session duration, page views, and more. It also offers advanced analysis capabilities such as segmentation, data visualization, custom reports, and automated insights. Furthermore, GA4 has enhanced data collection features that allow companies to track user behavior better so that they can make better-informed decisions about marketing strategies.
What happens if I do not migrate to GA4?
If you are not migrating from UA to GA4, you won’t be able to take advantage of the new features and benefits that GA4 provides. And also, you will miss out on any potential performance improvements from Google Analytics as well as not lose access to any upcoming updates. Additionally, your data may become outdated or incorrect due to compatibility issues with legacy versions of Google Analytics.
And as an FYI, Google will automatically convert your account to a GA4 account for you by using its automated setup assistant. However, it is not possible to migrate historical data from UA properties into the GA4 property created by the setup assistant, as the data collection processes between the two platforms are different.
What is involved in migrating to GA4?
Migrating to GA4 involves a few steps:
- Export existing data to spreadsheets.
- Replacing existing tags with the new Global Site Tag (gtag.js) code.
- Updating your Universal Analytics tracking code to use the new Measurement Protocol v4.
- Transferring any custom dimensions or metrics from UA to GA4.
- Setting up data streams for App + Web Properties, if applicable.
- Turning on Enhanced Measurement features, such as scroll tracking and user engagement measurement.
