Web Hosting | Better, faster and managed
Device Media has been hosting your website(s) for a very long time (for some it has been over 15 years). During this time we had 2 servers running over 100 sites.
The Web Hosting industry has changed immensely since we started our hosting service. Today, security and uptime are of the utmost importance especially when you have PPC campaigns running, marketing automation processes in place, and not to mention, email security. Also, the speed of your website is more critical than ever as it affects the user experience (UI/UX), SEO, and the integrated applications you may have running through the site.
Why is this happening?
The server is just too old and cannot be upgraded to meet the needs of today's internet demands. To put in human years the server is well into its late 90's. We can no longer keep it on life support and need to pull the plug.
You might not know this but our old friend DU22 (server name) is under constant attack every single day. Hackers and bots keep trying to break into the server and the websites on it with SQL injections, DDOS attacks, and continual login attempts.
The time and effort needed to maintain the server, check security, manage email security and all the other little things needed is getting to be too much. We configured a brand new system based in Vancouver which fits with our mission and vision of becoming a one-stop digital solution company.
So what are you doing about it?
We need to move the sites, period. There are three options:
- Your site gets moved to our new managed service with great support and a great team ready to go;
- We or You move it to a 3rd party hosting provider of your choice; or
- We move it to our own accounts on 3rd party providers.
The benefits are too many to count as mentioned above. We do have several clients within our accounts on GoDaddy, GreenGeeks (CDN), Microsoft (CDN), and WPEngine. If there is a problem the support available is usually top-notch and gets the fix done quickly and efficiently (as long as you explain the issue in detail).
What hosting platforms do you use?
We have worked with all the major hosting companies including GoDaddy, GreenGeeks, Host Papa, Bluehost, HostGator, Microsoft Azure, Siteground, WP Engine, and Flywheel. All have varying levels of service, support, price, and performance.
If your site is in WordPress then make sure your hosting company has a plan that is optimized for WordPress (some say they do but in reality, they do not). For cloud-based solutions, we are using Microsoft Azure as this is becoming the go-to method (along with Amazon AWS and Google Cloud). The Cloud is the future of development and integrating your website easily with apps and services.
Which should I choose?
That is a big question and there are some questions that you need to ask yourself:
Do I want my site hosted in Canada?
You might if you are concerned about FOIP as any data hosted in the United States is subject to access by the US government if deemed necessary. If not, then the world is your oyster.
Do I want to pay a premium for speed and service?
Each company has inexpensive hosting with deals, promos, and first-year discounts. The cheaper it is the less performance you get. If you want better speed and performance (good for UI/UX and SEO) then you might want to up your budget and get platform-specific hosting.
Do I want to manage it myself or let you?
We are happy to keep supporting your website by taking care of the billing, support and maintenance of the site and the account. If you want to manage it yourself then please supply us with your account information so we can help. If choosing to do it yourself ask that company if they will migrate the website for you, if not we would be happy to do it for you.
What about our email?
This is the toughest question to answer. We have been hosting quite a few of your email accounts. This will no longer be the case. Some hosting companies provide email and some do not. There are a lot of options out there and we can discuss them further. Currently, we are managing a lot of Office 365 accounts for clients and have realized the benefits. We use it here and it is super easy to set up and is accessible everywhere. Another option for Google fans is to attach your domain to your Gmail account so it will look and act as your current email account. All of these do come with an added cost.
